| Just to feel the power of a four legged animal under you is what I live for. My parents thought I would find a nice boy to spend the rest of my life with, and I did, but not the way they were thinking. My boy has hooves instead of feet and hands, a long face, and a mane and a tail. He has the kindest onyx eyes that have ever looked at me. People just call me the weird farm girl, but I deal with it. i don't care if I smell like manure everyday, if I have straw in my hair or muck on my boots. They will never know what I experience. In my books freedom and peace isn't about ending war or democracy. My definition is passion and the bond between a girl and her horse. First of all, my name is Courtney Jones. I live just outside the city of Kitchener on a small farm. My family raises chickens and pigs. We aren't rich, but we get by. I am 18, in grade 12 at EDSS. I have a few friends only cause I knew them from since we were five. I don't have a boyfriend and I don't have the best grades, but I try the best I can. since I can remember I have always wanted a horse of my own. My grandparents own a miniature horse ranch, so when i was younger I rode them, but I quickly out grew those ponies. After that, I would beg for a horse, much like other kids would beg for a puppy or a kitten. Course those are easier to take care of and much less expensive. Many years went by, and all my hopes were starting to diminish. My parents thought if they kept saying no, i would get over it and stop asking, but they were wrong. I knew that the only thing I wanted in life was a horse of my own. Finally they decided to let me have lessons. it wasn't they same as owning a horse, but I was happy for a long time, until they couldn't teach me anything else. i was the best rider at the barn, they said i had a understanding of the horses. My instructor told me I should compete, but I needed my own horse for that. she happily offered to find a coach for me in whatever discipline i wanted. Sadly, i had to decline her offer and continue doing the lessons which got to the point of them being so boring I had no fun at all. The lesson horses were nice and did what I wanted them to, but there was no challenge, no excitement. Just the same stuff over and over. A year after that my grandparents passed away. That was the saddest moment of my life. They were the only ones who understood me needs in life. After a week of their death, we got a letter in the mail. They had sold their farm and asked for the money to be put to me getting a horse of my own. It's funny how your grief can disappear instantly. From that moment on, I was the happiest girl to walk on this earth. His name is Dagger, short for Dagger Combat. When i first saw him, he was young. I bought him at a yearling sale. He is jet black except for a star, a thin stripe down his face and a white sock on his left hind leg. Pure quarter horse, all 16 hands of him. from the second I set my gaze on Dagger, I knew he was mine. We brought him home and i set work to him. A year later i could, he was ground worked to the max; lunging, going over poles, free jumps, etc. I could finally ride him! We went out and bought a nice leather tack. As soon as i released him with all it on, he had a bucking spree and took off, his legs flying in all directions. But he didn't do that long and eventually calmed. I then untacked him and gave him a treat. i did that for weeks until he didn't freak out when I released him. He stood so quiet and still, i knew i had to get on. Worse mistake of my life. As soon as i squeezed my calves into his sides, he leaped forward and bucked. i flew off and hit a tree. Two weeks in a coma, two months with concussions and a broken arm. My parents were a hairline away from getting rid of him, even with all my tears and refusals to go on without him. It that time i almost lost my boy. i eventually got better and got home. I tried again and this time he didn't do anything bad. it's like he knew that something bad happen and he shouldn't do that ever again. Another year passed and i trained him to the best of my ability, along with my instructor, since now I used him for lessons. One day she told me I should definitely compete with him, in reining. I was surprise, since i thought i would go into jumping or dressage. I thought I was an English girl. I heard all about the glory of jumping and never heard much about reining before. But she insisted, especially since he was a quarter horse and they way he carried himself. So for 6 long agonizing months, he was off getting trained while i i got coached by a nearby professional. When he finally came back, he had sliding plates on and his tail had thinned a bit. Knowing he had stepped on it, i trimmed it a couple inches. The next day I was to try him out. I started out with easy things to warm up, walk trot canter. i then began to do cross overs and flying lead changes. he was doing really well, so i then began to spin him. We flew around the circle. Dagger spun to perfection and already a smile had grown on my face. Next was the moment of truth. I let him canter in a few canters and started to chase him. he sped up with ease and galloped around half the arena in a circle. i then put him straight and sped him up more as we charged onward. Then i leaned back and threw my weight into the stirrups and my butt. I barely pulled the reins up and he stopped, pulling his legs under him and slide on them, sand spraying up around us. In that few heartbeats, I realize everything i wanted to accomplish in life had summed up right then and there. I was here with my horse, doing exactly what we love to do. All I needed to do now was to show the world what true riders can do. | |

| "Careful! Giver her some space!" A low, loud voice boomed as a man pushed a group of people from a stall. The man turned after locking the stall door. He watched carefully as a bay mare struggled in the straw. He cooed, "Easy, girl." About 3 hours later, a chestnut colt lay quietly in the straw as his mother cleaned him. The man unlatched the top half of the stall door. (I'm sorry, i'm having family problems, and I need to get my sister to sleep. I have the whole thing written down, and I'll post the rest in teh morning. I don't mind if I don't get anything, I just want to share the story. 'm sorry. ) | |
