PostSubject: Should the horse slaughter plants be allowed to re-open ?   Tue May 11, 2010 2:33 pm

There are currently no slaughter plants open in the USA. The last one was closed last year. Since then there have been thousands more reported cases of horses left to starve in fields, barns, various places. Or let go to fend for themselves. (domestic horses are NOT adapted to do this) Animal control and horse rescues are all running at capacity.
And the cases keep coming. What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that there should be horse slaughter plants open in the US. The plants should be more humane than what they have been and are in other countries. The benefits would be great. The price of horses would go up and the market would have a better outlook. More 'unwanted' horses wouldn't go to waste.

It hard to say. With plants, many unwanted horse from tracks won't be just abandoned. But also there are more humane ways like adoption and such, but people just want to leave them. Also it's hard for people to have enough money to take care of a horse, so if it's gunna die, they just leave it. But I gotta say, i disagree with plants, i don't think any animal should suffer through that. I'm talking about cows and pigs and any other livestock. But its hard to control that, but in my view, we should find more humane ways, but as i said its hard. the Humane society can't take on every horse. Not every horse will be adopted.

Here in the US there are way to many horses than can be cared for. SOme are left in pastures to die of starvation or any untreated diseases. That can be almost as bad as slaughter. Also some people in other countries enjoy eating horse meat. I do not think we should be disrespecting of others views. If you don;t want slaughte, come up with a better plan for thier care and containment. (Such as castrating nonsporting horses) Just saying.

In way sassy, i agree with you. US tends to just abuse many animals, with or without slaughter plants. I agree, we have to find better ways, but there are to many we can care for.

Yes we do. It is such a sad fate that we have. ANd I know what you mean. There are too many to adopt out. Especially with our downed economy. People can;t afford them anymore. So horses will die anyway. I think that the plants would at least put some second use to those who will never have a home. Please don;t think me cruel for my ideas. I just look at things more objectively.

I think horse slaughter should be re-opened, but in specific areas. Like, instead of spreading them everywhere, why not have a designated number of plants in each US state? The horses people leave to suffer, and die will suffer a lot less with slaughter houses, but I disagree, however, to the way they treat the horses: shoving them in crowded corrals by the hundreds that can barely fit 20 horses, the way thy actually Pass the Horse on is even more brutal, the way they transport the horses caused many deaths in Highway accidents, and they should just rethink the whole system. Maybe animal control should be the people to over look the Slaughter Houses.
It could be a good thing, but it can also be a horrible, wretched mistake to re-open them.
I don't think any horse deserves to go through that even if they were the worst horse in the world, which doesn't exist to me.

There should be an organization that overlooks all slaughter houses. I heard once about a woman who came up with a good slaughter house. Instead of animals being forced and frightened into their deaths, they went through sort of a maze to the plant. They were allowed to go at their own pace and the scent of death didn;t reach them. Then the animals were humanely put down. To stop animals from being mistreated in transport, police officers should have to check the trailers at way points, just like for any other product. It should be stated that only so many animals are allowed into a single load. That would be better. Maybe we could petition the government about regulations on animal slaughter.
